Initially established on a bluff of the Pearl River as a trading post called LeFleur’s Bluff, Jackson was chosen in 1821 to be the state capital and renamed Jackson. Though not located on the Mississippi, Jackson was near the center of the state, and a major trade route, the Natchez Trace.
