Located in a deep valley in western Montana, the city of Missoula is the second largest city in Montana and serves as county seat of Missoula County. The city was founded in 1860 as Hellgate Trading Post before being renamed Missoula Mills. Missoula is best known for being home to the University of Montana and the birthplace of Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to U.S. Congress. Up until the 1880s, Missoula’s founding as a lumber and agricultural trading post supported early development. It was not until 1883 when Missoula’s growth really accelerated with the establishment of the Northern Pacific Railway in town. Timber demand for the railway led to the organization of lumber, pulp and paper companies such as Intermountain Lumber Company and Hoerner Waldorf Corporation.

Missoula became a thriving city but was lacking one modern commodity of the time — electricity. In the 1930s, electric utilities considered it too expensive and unprofitable to run power lines to rural areas like Missoula. Missoula Electric Cooperative was formed in 1939 and helped energize the first 75 miles of line that served people from Hellgate to Six Mile, Milltown to two miles east of Clinton, and from Lolo south to Bass Creek. Today, Missoula’s economy has undergone diversification with the presence of education, healthcare, retail, government, and tourism industries. The University of Montana is the area’s largest employer, followed by St. Patrick Hospital and the Community Medical Center.
