Bremerton, with a population of about 38,700, is a city on Puget Sound in Kitsap County, Washington. Incorporated in 1901, Bremerton is home to both the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton Annex. The shipyard has historically been one of Bremerton’s largest employers. Other representative employers include Northrop Grumman, Harrison Medical Center and Olympic College, founded in 1946 as Olympic Junior College.
Bremerton’s development largely parallels that of the Navy Yard, which was established as a Naval Station in 1891 and was designated a Naval Shipyard in 1901. Anticipating the growth of the yard, William Bremer and Henry Hensel purchased a large area of land near Point Turner in 1891, and sold some of it to the Navy for the shipyard site. They also platted what would become the city of Bremerton. As ship construction brought additional workers to the yard during World Wars I and II, Bremerton also expanded to provide new residences and businesses, resulting in the annexation of nearby Manette in 1918, and Charleston in 1927. In 1933, the Dravo Corporation built and installed a massive 250-foot hammerhead crane at the yard. Although no longer in use, the crane, now a historic landmark, remains a familiar feature on the Bremerton skyline. From 1955 to 1985, the battleship U.S.S. Missouri served as a tourist attraction while part of the Pacific Reserve Fleet housed at PSNS. Towards the end of the 20th century, Bremerton has declined somewhat, as the development of malls in neighboring towns has driven businesses out of the downtown area. Several recent development projects have aimed to revitalize the waterfront area with parks and condominiums.
